Is a loft conversion right for your home?

Not every loft is suitable for conversion. Our experts will talk you through the different options and whether they are right for your home. Here are some of the most popular types of loft conversion.

Internal

Also known as a roof light loft conversion, this involves converting your existing loft space. The floor may need to be strengthened and windows installed, but you’re unlikely to need planning permission.

Dormer

A dormer adds extra height to your loft space. As with the internal loft conversion, this may fall under permitted development.

L-Shaped Dormer

This loft conversion is often suitable for Victorian or Edwardian homes where there is an existing extension at the back of the property. The L-shape is formed when two dormers are built and then joined together.

Full-Width Dormer

This type of conversion will really maximise your loft space, ideal if you want to unlock as much room as possible.

Mansard

A mansard loft conversion will usually be built on the back of your home and have a central flat roof. You’ll usually need planning permission but it provides a great amount of space. Increase your natural light with a Juliette balcony.

Hip-to-gable

For this loft conversion, the slanted end roof is straightened to create a vertical wall. It’s a great option for detached, semi-detached or end of terrace homes and can really increase your living space.
